Tiger Woods and Bill Ackman built their reputations in different worlds. Woods became one of golf’s most accomplished champions, while Ackman became a prominent investor through Pershing Square and campaigns to change the companies in which his firm invested.

Their names share a documented connection through Nike, although their relationships with the company were different. Woods represented Nike as a sponsored athlete for more than 27 years. Ackman’s investment firm bought Nike shares. The reliable sources reviewed for this article do not establish a direct business partnership, family relationship, or confirmed close friendship between them.

The Nike Connection: Sponsorship and Share Ownership

Woods began his Nike relationship in 1996, the year he turned professional. His tournament victories, red Sunday shirts, and worldwide recognition made him one of the company’s most visible athletes.

On January 8, 2024, Woods announced that the partnership had ended. Nike separately acknowledged the conclusion of their long association.

Ackman’s relationship with Nike involved investment capital. Reuters reported in August 2024 that Pershing Square held approximately three million Nike shares at the end of June, representing about 0.19% of the company.

That was a return to a familiar investment. According to the same report, Ackman had previously invested in Nike in late 2017 and earned approximately $100 million from that earlier position.

The distinction matters: an endorsement agreement pays an athlete to represent a brand, while share ownership gives an investor an economic interest in a company. Pershing Square’s Nike investment does not establish that Ackman invested in Woods personally or financed his businesses.

Tiger Woods’ Childhood and Rise Through Amateur Golf

Eldrick Tont Woods was born in Cypress, California, to Earl and Kultida Woods. His father was a U.S. Army veteran, and his mother came from Thailand. Woods’ American nationality and his parents’ backgrounds describe different parts of his identity.

The nickname “Tiger” came from a Vietnamese soldier who was a friend of Earl’s. It became the name under which Woods competed and eventually built his business identity.

Earl introduced his son to golf during early childhood. Woods developed within Southern California’s junior golf system, where his results soon distinguished him from other young players.

From 1991 through 1993, he won three consecutive U.S. Junior Amateur championships. He then won three consecutive U.S. Amateur titles from 1994 through 1996, creating an exceptional record before beginning his professional career.

Woods entered Stanford University in 1994 and competed there for two seasons. He won the individual NCAA championship in 1996, then left college to turn professional without completing a degree.

Major Championships, Injuries, and Woods’ Comebacks

Woods’ victory at the 1997 Masters changed the scale of his career. At 21, he became the tournament’s youngest champion and its first Black winner, finishing a record 12 strokes ahead of the field.

His dominance intensified in 2000. At the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, he won by 15 strokes, a major championship record. That year, he also completed the career Grand Slam by winning the Open Championship.

When Woods won the 2001 Masters, he held all four men’s major championship titles simultaneously. The achievement became known as the “Tiger Slam,” although the victories occurred across two calendar years.

Physical problems later interrupted that dominance. Knee injuries and repeated back operations restricted his schedule and sometimes made his competitive future uncertain.

His 2019 Masters victory ended an almost 11-year wait for another major title. Later that year, he won the Zozo Championship for his 82nd PGA Tour victory, tying Sam Snead’s record.

A serious car crash in February 2021 caused major injuries to his right leg. Woods subsequently returned to selected tournaments, but walking full championship courses remained a significant challenge.

His recognition extended beyond tournament results. He entered the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2022 and received the USGA’s Bob Jones Award in 2024.

Woods’ Marriage, Children, and Life Beyond Competition

Woods married Elin Nordegren in 2004. Their daughter, Sam Alexis, was born in 2007, followed by their son, Charlie Axel, in 2009.

The marriage ended in divorce in 2010 after public revelations about Woods’ infidelity. His later publicly documented relationships included skier Lindsey Vonn and Erica Herman.

In March 2025, Woods announced a relationship with Vanessa Trump. Reporting on his September 2026 court appearance also identified her as his girlfriend.

His children have appeared alongside him at important moments. Sam introduced him at his World Golf Hall of Fame induction, while Charlie has competed with him at the PNC Championship and pursued junior golf.

Woods has also supported Sam’s soccer activities. These appearances show a family life that extends beyond Charlie’s involvement in his father’s sport.

His parents remained important figures throughout his career. Earl died in 2006, and Kultida died in February 2025.

Bill Ackman’s Upbringing and Education at Harvard

William Albert Ackman was born on May 11, 1966, and grew up in Chappaqua, New York. His parents were Ronnie and Lawrence David Ackman, whose career in commercial real estate finance gave the family an established connection to business.

Ackman comes from an Ashkenazi Jewish family. He attended Horace Greeley High School before continuing his education at Harvard.

He graduated from Harvard College in 1988 with a degree in social studies, earning magna cum laude honors He later returned to Harvard Business School and received his MBA in 1992.

His early professional experience included real estate investment banking at Ackman Brothers and Singer. He then moved into investment management, where researching businesses and taking concentrated positions became central to his career.

In 1992, Ackman co-founded Gotham Partners with David Berkowitz. The firm invested in public and private businesses and attracted attention through an unsuccessful effort involving Rockefeller Center.

Gotham eventually encountered difficulties and wound down. Ackman’s next firm would bring him a much larger public profile.

Pershing Square: Major Successes and Costly Mistakes

Ackman established Pershing Square during 2003–2004. The firm’s corporate biography dates its founding to 2003, while its philanthropic biography and historical reporting describe the investment business as beginning in 2004.

He became known as an activist investor: someone who buys a stake in a company and may press for changes to leadership, strategy, or corporate structure.

Canadian Pacific became one of his most successful campaigns. Pershing Square began buying shares in 2011 and won seven board seats in a contested shareholder vote in 2012.

Reuters reported that the investment generated approximately $2.6 billion in profit before Pershing Square completed its exit in 2016. The firm later returned as an investor.

Other decisions produced substantial losses. Pershing Square’s investment in Valeant Pharmaceuticals collapsed, and Ackman apologized to investors after exiting the position in 2017.

His campaign against Herbalife also became a prolonged public battle. Ackman alleged that the company operated a pyramid scheme, a characterization Herbalife disputed. His investment position should be distinguished from a judicial finding.

In March 2020, Pershing Square earned approximately $2.6 billion from credit protection purchased to hedge its portfolio during the emerging coronavirus crisis. That money belonged to the investment funds; it was not equivalent to Ackman personally receiving $2.6 billion.

Ackman’s Family, Philanthropy, and Both Men’s Wealth

Ackman married landscape architect Karen Ann Herskovitz in 1994. They had three children before separating and subsequently divorcing.

He married designer Neri Oxman in January 2019. They welcomed a daughter that year, bringing his publicly documented number of children to four.

Philanthropy has become another substantial part of his public work. The Pershing Square Foundation, established in 2006, supports initiatives involving health, education, economic opportunity, and innovation.

Its current philanthropic website reports more than $930 million in grants and investments across Pershing Square Philanthropies. That institutional total should not be treated as a measure of Ackman’s personal annual giving.

Woods’ charitable work centers on the TGR Foundation, originally established in 1996. Its educational programs include learning opportunities and support for students pursuing college and careers.

Their wealth also comes from different sources. Woods has earned tournament prize money, endorsement income, and returns from business interests. Forbes estimated his net worth at at least $1 billion in June 2022; that is a dated estimate rather than a verified current balance.

Ackman’s wealth reflects investment holdings and ownership interests in his asset management business. The assets Pershing Square manages include clients’ money and must not be presented as his personal fortune.

Their Latest Documented Chapters

Woods has expanded his commercial work beyond his former Nike agreement. In February 2024, he and TaylorMade announced Sun Day Red, a separate apparel and footwear brand.

He also helped develop TGL through TMRW Sports alongside Rory McIlroy. His Jupiter Links team ownership was announced with investor David Blitzer, a documented partnership that should not be confused with Ackman.

Health and legal developments continued to affect Woods’ activities. He underwent surgery for a ruptured left Achilles tendon in March 2025.

Following a separate rollover crash in March 2026, Woods reached a plea agreement in September. He pleaded no contest to reduced driving-related charges, received a five-year license suspension, and avoided jail; the original DUI charge was dropped.

Ackman’s recent work has focused on expanding Pershing Square’s investment business. Its August 2026 shareholder letter reported the launch of Pershing Square USA and the public listing of Pershing Square Inc.

The letter also described preparations for Pershing Square Ventures, intended to invest in private growth companies. At that point, it remained a developing initiative rather than an established long-term investment record.

Woods’ next competitive chapter depends heavily on his physical recovery. Ackman’s next business chapter depends on investment performance and the growth of his firm. Their shared Nike history provides a factual connection, while their documented lives remain distinct stories.
