Tom Kennedy and Anna Wintour built their reputations in different areas of media. Kennedy became a familiar television presence through American game shows, while Wintour shaped fashion publishing through her long leadership of Vogue.

No reliable evidence located for this article establishes them as relatives, romantic partners, or significant professional collaborators. This article covers Tom Kennedy, the television host born James Edward Narz, alongside Wintour, tracing their separate documented lives without suggesting a relationship that the records do not support.

Tom Kennedy’s Early Life and Broadcasting Beginnings

Tom Kennedy was born James Edward Narz in Louisville, Kentucky. His older brother, Jack Narz, also became a television host, making broadcasting a significant connection between their professional lives.

Kennedy attended the University of Missouri, where he began working in radio. That experience gave him a foundation in announcing and presenting before he moved into television.

His early career included radio work and television commercials. These jobs preceded the game shows that eventually made his professional name familiar to viewers across the country.

In 1957, he adopted the name Tom Kennedy to distinguish himself from Jack. The change gave the brothers separate identities in an industry where both worked in similar roles.

Kennedy began hosting The Big Game in 1958. Although the program did not become a lasting success, it marked an early step toward a television career that would continue for decades.

From You Don’t Say! to Name That Tune

Kennedy’s major breakthrough came with You Don’t Say!, which he hosted on NBC from 1963 to 1969. The celebrity word game gave him a sustained national platform after several shorter assignments.

He subsequently hosted Split Second from 1972 to 1975. Its fast-moving question format offered a different challenge from the wordplay and celebrity interaction of his earlier success.

Name That Tune became another defining credit. Kennedy hosted the program from 1974 to 1981, placing him at the center of a musical competition that remains closely associated with his career.

In 1980, he took over hosting duties on Password Plus after Allen Ludden became ill. Kennedy remained with the program until 1982.

His later work included Body Language and a syndicated nighttime version of The Price Is Right during the 1985–1986 season. Together, these assignments demonstrate the range of formats he presented: word games, music contests, quizzes, and pricing competitions.

Kennedy also worked outside game shows. He briefly hosted The Real Tom Kennedy Show in 1970 and made acting appearances in television series including That Girl and Cannon.

Kennedy’s Marriage, Children, and Final Years

Kennedy married Betty Gevedon, whom contemporary reporting described as his college sweetheart. They had four children: Linda, James, Julia, and Courtney.

Betty died in 2011, and Julia died in 2015. When Kennedy died, reporting identified his three surviving children and a granddaughter among his family.

He retired from regular hosting in 1989. By then, his career included several of the best-known titles in American game-show television.

Kennedy died at his home in Oxnard, California, on October 7, 2020, at age 93. His friend Steve Beverly announced the death after receiving the news from Kennedy’s daughter.

Beverly reported that Kennedy had experienced poor health in his final months. The reporting reviewed here did not establish a specific cause of death.

His professional legacy rests on the programs themselves: a substantial record of hosting work across nearly three decades of network and syndicated television.

Anna Wintour’s London Upbringing and Early Career

Anna Wintour was born in London on November 3, 1949, to Charles Wintour and Eleanor Trego Baker. Her father edited the Evening Standard, and her brother Patrick also pursued journalism.

She attended North London Collegiate School. During her teenage years, she developed an interest in fashion through magazines, London’s changing clothing culture, and early retail experience.

Her father helped arrange a job at the Biba boutique when she was 15. She later left school and entered a training program at Harrods, gaining practical experience rather than following a university route.

Wintour entered fashion journalism in 1970 through Harper’s & Queen. In 1975, she moved to New York and joined Harper’s Bazaar as a junior fashion editor.

That appointment ended after nine months when the magazine dismissed her. However, she continued working in publishing, including positions at Viva and New York magazine.

These early jobs preceded her arrival at Vogue in 1983 as creative director. She subsequently led British Vogue and then House & Garden before taking charge of American Vogue in 1988.

How Wintour Changed American Vogue

Wintour’s first American Vogue cover appeared in November 1988. Peter Lindbergh photographed model Michaela Bercu wearing a Christian Lacroix couture jacket with Guess jeans.

The image departed from the tightly composed, heavily styled portraits that readers associated with the magazine. Bercu appeared outdoors, with wind moving her hair and her eyes partly closed.

Writing about the cover in 2012, Wintour recalled that the printers contacted Vogue to ask whether the selection was a mistake. Her account provides a specific example of how visibly the magazine’s direction changed.

Across her editorship, Vogue increasingly featured people from film, music, sports, and politics alongside fashion models. The magazine’s coverage connected clothing and designers with a broader celebrity culture.

Her influence also extended to emerging designers through initiatives such as the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. Editorial attention, mentorship, and industry access became important parts of that support.

However, Wintour’s public reputation has also attracted criticism. Commentary has questioned her demanding management style and the fashion industry’s standards of beauty and exclusivity.

The 2009 documentary The September Issue offered audiences a view of her work at Vogue. Meanwhile, The Devil Wears Prada helped shape public perceptions, although its fictional characters and events should not serve as a factual account of her life.

Wintour’s Family, Museum Work, and Honors

Wintour married psychiatrist David Shaffer in 1984. They had two children, Charles and Katherine, commonly known as Bee, before divorcing in 1999.

Charles pursued medicine, while Bee developed a career in entertainment production. Their professional achievements belong to their own biographies, although both have appeared publicly with their mother.

Wintour later had a long-term relationship with businessman Shelby Bryan. No reliable material reviewed here identifies Tom Kennedy as her spouse or partner.

Her work with the Metropolitan Museum of Art forms a separate, well-documented part of her public life. She became a museum trustee in January 1999 and helped develop the Costume Institute Benefit into a major fundraising event.

In January 2014, the museum announced that its renovated Costume Institute complex would carry the name Anna Wintour Costume Center. At that time, it credited her benefit leadership and fundraising work with helping raise approximately $125 million.

That figure represents money raised for the institution, not Wintour’s personal wealth or individual donations.

Her honors include appointment as a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2017. She also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in January 2025.

Wintour’s Leadership Transition and Recent Work

In June 2025, Wintour announced that she would relinquish day-to-day leadership of American Vogue. The announcement ended a 37-year period as its editor-in-chief, but it did not mark her retirement from publishing.

On September 2, 2025, Condé Nast named Chloe Malle head of editorial content for Vogue U.S. Malle took responsibility for the American edition’s daily editorial direction while reporting to Wintour.

Wintour retained broader responsibilities as Condé Nast’s chief content officer and Vogue’s global editorial director. Describing the transition simply as her departure from Vogue would therefore leave out an important part of the arrangement.

Her documented work continued in October 2026. In a Vogue article published that month, she reflected on photographer Irving Penn and introduced Vogue Portraits, a two-volume collection scheduled for publication on October 27.

The piece connects her recent work with a central part of her career: commissioning, selecting, and presenting photography that brings fashion publishing into conversation with wider cultural life.

Income, Net Worth, and the Relationship Question

Kennedy earned his living through broadcasting, television hosting, and acting. However, the sources reviewed did not provide a sufficiently documented account of his assets, liabilities, or estate to establish a reliable net worth.

Wintour’s principal documented professional income comes from her publishing and executive career. Online salary and wealth estimates do not amount to a verified statement of her personal finances, so this article does not present an estimated figure as fact.

The same evidentiary standard applies to the pairing of their names. Their biographies establish separate families, employers, and professional histories; they do not establish a shared personal story.

Kennedy’s completed career belongs to the history of American television entertainment. Wintour’s ongoing work concerns fashion publishing and cultural institutions. Both subjects have substantial documented lives, and those records provide a stronger foundation than an unsupported claim connecting them.
