Paul Werdel is a journalist and digital news product professional whose career has included BBC News, Al Jazeera English, Talking Points Memo, and The New York Times. His documented work spans television production, newsroom editing, mobile publishing, and the way readers find stories online.

He is also the husband of PBS News Hour co-anchor Amna Nawaz. Their family became part of a wider conversation about working parents after Werdel stepped away from his Times job in 2018 to become the primary caregiver for their two daughters.

Background and the First Documented Newsroom Roles

Werdel’s public career record is considerably clearer than the record of his childhood. His birth date, exact age, birthplace, parents, and siblings are not publicly verified through the reliable sources available for this biography.

Accounts of a University of Maryland journalism degree also circulate, but an accessible institutional or first-person record confirming the qualification was not located. His professional history, however, has contemporary documentation.

The 2005 Congressional Directory lists Werdel among BBC personnel admitted to the congressional radio and television galleries. An author biography published with his later Talking Points Memo work identifies his earlier BBC position as producer.

He subsequently worked as a news editor at Al Jazeera English. Both the TPM biography and a professional reference document from correspondent Cath Turner support that role, with the latter placing his Al Jazeera work in Washington, D.C.

These records establish the direction of his early career: television production first, followed by editorial responsibility in international news.

At Talking Points Memo, Speed Required Careful Verification

By March 2012, Werdel was an associate editor at Talking Points Memo, commonly known as TPM. A contemporaneous interview in Streaming Media described him as helping run the publication’s New York bureau.

The interview provides an unusually specific picture of his work. TPM recorded eight television news channels around the clock and used searchable transcripts to identify breaking developments, locate footage, and check what public figures had said.

Werdel assigned clips to colleagues, coordinated accompanying articles, and sometimes handled video searches and technical troubleshooting himself. During election debates, the newsroom repeatedly consulted recordings to verify statements before publishing.

He emphasized that automated transcripts served as a guide. Editors still needed to listen to the original footage to establish precise wording.

His published journalism also extended beyond campaign coverage. On May 18, 2012, TPM’s Idea Lab carried his report about a University of California, Berkeley project that deployed 100 small robotic watercraft in the Sacramento River.

The surviving article, preserved on the research project’s website, connects his byline with technology reporting as well as political news editing.

Paul Werdel’s Work at The New York Times

Werdel later moved into digital product work at The New York Times. Contemporary reporting documents specific responsibilities and projects, rather than simply listing an impressive employer.

In August 2015, Digiday identified him as a senior product manager for mobile. He discussed the Times’ use of a button that allowed readers to expand an article after its opening paragraphs.

The design also gave visitors a route to other stories. According to Werdel, the change produced a moderate increase in the time readers spent with the publication.

His explanation centered on a practical challenge: showing occasional visitors the range of journalism available beyond the article that first brought them to the site.

By June 2017, Nieman Lab identified Werdel as the product lead for the Times’ home screen redesign and replatforming. He explained that research showed the existing screen communicated the day’s news more effectively than the broader selection of Times content.

The redesign formed part of a larger effort to improve the reading experience across devices. Werdel’s documented responsibility concerned the home screen, within a project involving numerous editorial, design, engineering, and product colleagues.

Designer Allen Tan’s portfolio also credits Werdel among the product contributors to the Times’ 2018 homepage redesign. Together, these records show his progression from managing news material to developing the digital places where audiences encountered it.

Marriage to Amna Nawaz and an Early Washington Home

Werdel and Nawaz met as journalists, according to her December 2022 interview with The 19th, republished by WFAE. Published biographical reporting dates their marriage to 2007.

A firsthand glimpse of their early married life appeared in Apartment Therapy on August 19, 2010. The couple opened their rented, 750-square-foot apartment in Washington’s Adams Morgan neighborhood for a home tour.

Their jobs involved busy travel schedules, but the apartment contained reminders of people and places important to them. Photographs, posters, artwork, and objects from family friends filled the rooms.

Werdel’s contributions were hands-on. The tour credited him with installing floating shelves, assembling a platform bed, and creating a bedroom arrangement of bureaus while Nawaz was away on assignment.

His photography also appeared among the apartment’s artwork. These details offer a more personal view of him than a résumé alone: someone who took photographs and worked on the home the couple shared.

The interview documented that apartment at a particular moment. It should not be read as a description of their present residence.

The 2018 Decision That Changed Their Family Routine

A major turning point came when Nawaz joined PBS NewsHour in 2018. Werdel was then running a team at The New York Times, she told The 19th.

According to her account, he proposed stepping back from paid work and taking on full-time care of their children. The arrangement allowed her to devote more time to the new position.

Their daughters, Karam and Lina, became central to his daily schedule. In the 2022 interview, Nawaz described him handling school pickups, packed lunches, ballet trips, and everyday childhood injuries.

She also acknowledged the financial flexibility that made their decision possible. Even with a full-time parent, the family relied on nearby relatives and babysitters.

That qualification matters to the story. Their arrangement involved changes and compromises, alongside support from a wider family network.

In a later interview published by Executive Woman Media, Nawaz again described the proposal as Werdel’s initiative. She said it relieved the pressure of coordinating childcare around commuting and reporting, while giving their daughters a direct example of a father taking primary responsibility at home.

Supporting a Partner Through Difficult Reporting

Nawaz has also described Werdel’s support during a particularly difficult period in her reporting career.

In the Executive Woman Media interview, she discussed the emotional effects of covering the 2022 school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. She said her husband recognized that she was struggling and encouraged her to seek therapy.

This is her account of his response, rather than a public statement from Werdel about the experience. It documents a specific form of support within their marriage, beyond managing schedules and childcare.

Werdel has publicly celebrated her professional progress, too. In a LinkedIn post responding to the announcement that she and Geoff Bennett would lead NewsHour, he expressed pride in his wife and support for the program’s future.

What Is Known About His Income and Net Worth?

Werdel’s documented professional work has included editorial and digital product positions at established news organizations. Those employment roles provide identifiable sources of past earnings, but his salary history has not been publicly established.

Paul Werdel’s net worth is not publicly verified. No credible financial disclosure or independently supported estimate was located.

His wife’s career, assumed industry salaries, or the family’s childcare decisions cannot establish the value of his assets, debts, or investments.

The Latest Reliable Picture of His Life

Public institutional biographies of Nawaz place her with her husband and their two daughters in the Washington, D.C., area. The most detailed published accounts of Werdel’s later life concern his caregiving role and their family’s adjustment after 2018.

As of October 2026, the sources reviewed do not establish a current employer or a dated return to full-time professional work. His departure from the Times should therefore be described as a documented career break, without assuming either permanent retirement or continued employment there.

Werdel’s story has two well-supported chapters: practical work in broadcast and digital journalism, followed by a substantial shift in family responsibilities. The surviving interviews and project credits give both chapters concrete detail, allowing his biography to stand on his own work and documented choices.
